Obituary of Winifred Kingslow
Winifred B. Kingslow, age 90, of Hawthorne, NJ, formerly of Teaneck, departed this life peacefully on Friday, April 24, 2020 with family by her side; her youngest son, Anthony, holding her hand with immense gratitude. We, her children, will miss her kind and loving presence but feel most fortunate for having had her as our mother. “Winnie”, as she was known to family and friends, worked as a stenographer for the U.S. District Court Probation System when she lived in the New York City as a young woman. When she moved to New Jersey with her family she worked as an office assistant at Fairleigh Dickinson University for many years prior to her retirement. After the death of her dear husband, Bill, she took a part-time job at a local day care located at The Ethical Culture Society in Teaneck, a job which suited her well. Our mom absolutely loved children and told us that she always had loved them from as long as she could remember. In addition, Winnie enjoyed music, loved to sing, was an avid card player, enjoyed walking, and trips to Atlantic City. She was a big sports fan. Starting with the Brooklyn Dodgers, she eventually became a New York Yankee fan, watching numerous games from the bleacher seats at Yankee stadium with her young family. She later discovered a love for basketball, becoming a New Jersey Nets fan and a vigorous supporter of March Madness. She later came to follow tennis and golf.
A shy person by nature, she was – like her dear husband – a person of solid character and immense good humor. Kindhearted through and through, she was always concerned for the less fortunate, determined to do her best to help those in need, and often times, deeply saddened over news stories depicting the suffering and injustices of our world. Nevertheless, she was a person of great strength and conviction. We have memories of our mom sitting at the kitchen table writing numerous checks every month to send to various charities, despite her modest means. She would never let the landscapers who mowed the lawn regularly, leave without a shopping bag filled with snacks and beverages. Winnie was a beautiful person, inside and out. She was fortunate to have experienced many joys throughout her long life – simple ones like Christmas mornings and summer vacations, and glorious ones like becoming a grandmother. However, she also withstood many sorrows, foremost of which was the untimely loss of her second son, Stephen, and a lengthy struggle with dementia, complications from which ultimately claimed her life.
Winnie is survived by her cherished sons Paul and Anthony, Paul’s adoring wife Janeth, who was dedicated to our mom in a most loving way until the end, her loving daughter, Donna, grandchildren Andrew, Stephen, Trevor, William, Marjorie and Lily, her devoted aide, Eunice, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins, all of whom loved her dearly. She was predeceased by her adoring husband, Bill, and her deeply loved son, Stephen Joseph. We are comforted in our belief that our mother is now at peace and at home with those whom she loved in this life who have gone on before her, and with God.
A Christian burial will take place at a date to be determined. It will be private due to current guidelines. In keeping with our mother’s tradition of helping those less fortunate, we ask that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Catholic Charities Diocese of Paterson Covid 19 Fund, 777 Valley Road, Clifton,
